I worked on Homeroom with a couple of friends to make running a VR arcade a little easier. One of them ran VR Bar in Dumbo, Brooklyn, so we had somewhere to try it with actual customers.

My part was the Unity and OpenVR overlay inside the headset. A customer could pick another game, check and extend their session, order a drink or ask for help, without taking the headset off.

Each station stayed in sync with a venue server over WebSockets. The staff side handled station reservations, signing people in, waivers and a wait list. A bit like managing tables in a restaurant, except the tables have people waving controllers around.

Our team included a 3D animator working in Maya and another developer working on the WebSocket server, with me on the overlay. We had a working prototype and two beta customers when the pandemic closed VR Bar and most of the venues we were hoping to work with.
